The Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure® (originated in Dallas in 1983) is a fund-raiser for the Susan G. Komen For The Cure, one of the nation's leading funder of breast cancer research and community outreach programs. By the year 2002, there were 112 Komen Race for the Cure® events across the country and three international races. There are currently 116 affiliates
The Aspen Race for the Cure® funds breast health initiatives in our tri-county service area of Pitkin, Garfield and Eagle Counties and provides grants to local non-profits.
The Aspen 2007 Race helped raise $550,000 in grants to our local service area. 25% of funds help fund the Susan G. Komen Foundation‚s innovative and cutting edge National Research program. 75% of funds raised stay in our local community.
The Race attracts men, women and children of all ages and athletic abilities. It is an emotional and exhilarating event that gives women and their families an opportunity to support the fight against breast cancer in our community, to remember those who have lost the battle, and to celebrate those who are surviving.
The Susan G. Komen For The Cure was established in 1982 by Nancy Brinker to honor the memory of her sister Susan, who died of breast cancer at the age of 36. The Aspen Affiliate has been active since 1991, and has raised over $4-million.
